Regionally, the main transport available within Chiclayo and the Lambayeque area is buses, which travel intermittently and connect various outlying destinations. Around Chiclayo, many backpackers and tourists choose to travel by 'combis' (shared minibuses), 'colectivos' (private licenced cars) or simply use taxi transport for short distances.

A number of these bus companies are based in the very centre of Chiclayo, with terminals close to the southerly Avenida Bolognesi. Long-distance bus transport travels daily to many towns and cities outside of the city and along the Pacific coast, including Cajamarca, Chachapoyas and also Tarapoto, amongst others.

Chiclayo's very own airport is located a mere 1.5 km / 1 mile to the east of the city centre and is officially named the Capitán FAP José A. Quinones Gonzales International Airport. Being so close to the action, Chiclayo Airport can be reached in a matter of minutes by using taxis for transport, and any cost is really very minimal. Several different airlines currently service this facility, including LAN Peru, with daily flights travelling to a number of domestic Peruvian cities, such as Iquitos, Lima, Piura, and also to the northerly city of Tumbes, close to the border with Ecuador.

The Pan-American Highway lies on the northern side of Chiclayo and means that anybody brave enough to rent a car will find it relatively easy to reach other places of interest around the coastline. To rent a car in Peru, you must be at least 25 years old, and bring with you both a valid driving licence and passport. Be warned though - the roads of northern Peru are notoriously bumpy, dusty, and poorly signposted, and therefore driving around the Lambayeque region can be quite an adventure. Therefore, many visitors do now prefer to hire a car complete with its own personal driver.

A selection of different bus companies is operating in Chiclayo, the most noteworthy of which are Cruz del Sur, Linea and also Movil. The most popular buses run several times a day to Chota, Congoyape, Cutervo, Ferrenafe, Jaen, Monsefu, Pimentel, Sipan, Tucume, Yurimaguas and Zana.
